Session Outline
This presentation explores how Kingston University's sustainability education initiatives foster understanding of climate change through an inclusive, equity-focused, and diversity-informed lens. Aligned with SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), it highlights how climate education can move beyond environmental and scientific perspectives to address social justice, equity, and global citizenship.
The session will showcase approaches to embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) across the curriculum that recognise and value students' diverse lived experiences, identities, and knowledge systems. Particular attention will be given to student-staff partnerships, where students have co-created staff development resources, learning materials, and curriculum guidance that support academic staff in embedding sustainability and climate literacy across disciplines in meaningful, authentic, and inclusive ways.
Drawing on this work, the presentation will demonstrate how educational development and curriculum design can support academic staff in embedding climate change in meaningful, authentic, and inclusive ways. Examples will show how co-created resources and staff development initiatives have helped educators connect sustainability to their disciplinary contexts while incorporating diverse perspectives, promoting belonging, and addressing equity and social justice.
The importance of this work is increasingly evident as communities experience the impacts of climate change unevenly. Many students and their families may already be facing the social, economic, health, or environmental consequences of climate-related challenges. As a result, climate education must create space for diverse experiences and perspectives while helping students understand the connections between sustainability, justice, and inequality. At the same time, higher education has a critical role in preparing graduates with the green skills, systems-thinking capabilities, and problem-solving approaches needed to respond to different cultural contexts and develop sustainable solutions as future employees, professionals, leaders, and decision-makers.
Rather than presenting a fixed model of practice, the session will actively engage participants in reflecting on how student-staff partnerships at their own institutions can strengthen sustainability learning and inclusive educational practice. Through discussion and collaborative activities, participants will identify practical approaches for positioning students as partners in curriculum development, staff development, and institutional change, while role-modelling the collaborative and transformative values embedded within the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants will leave with ideas and strategies they can adapt to their own contexts to create more inclusive, sustainability-focused learning environments that prepare learners to contribute to a just and sustainable future.
