Session Outline
Within the Jewellery programmes at City of Glasgow College, sustainability is embedded as an integral part of contemporary design practice rather than treated as a separate topic. Our approach encourages students to consider the environmental, social and ethical implications of the decisions they make as designers and makers, from the sourcing of materials through to manufacture, longevity, repair, reuse and end-of-life.
Students are introduced to ethical material sourcing, including recycled and responsibly sourced precious metals, material provenance and the environmental and social impacts associated with mining. Through practical projects, students are encouraged to explore reclaimed, recycled and alternative materials and to consider how existing objects and materials can be given new value.
Sustainability is also used as a creative catalyst. Students are challenged to work within material constraints, reuse existing resources and design with longevity in mind. Projects involving upcycling, found materials and circular design demonstrate that environmental responsibility does not have to restrict creativity; instead, constraints can stimulate experimentation, problem-solving and innovation.
Live and industry-facing projects allow students to see these principles operating in professional practice. Examples have included the COP26 First Minister's Brooch, which explored rising sea levels and incorporated Fairtrade and recycled precious metals, and collaborative projects using AgAIN silver, reclaimed from medical X-ray film.
This approach particularly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13: Climate Action.
Ultimately, our aim is to develop graduates who understand that ethical making is not simply about choosing a recycled material. It involves questioning where materials come from, who and what is affected by their extraction and production.

Presenter
Lisa McGovern is Programme Coordinator for Ba/Hons Design Practice and Curriculum Head of Craft & Design at City of Glasgow College, where she leads curriculum innovation across creative disciplines. A Green Gown Award Winner (2023) and conscious-based maker, Lisa recently completed a Master’s in Learning and Teaching in the Arts at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, with research focused on ecopedagogical approaches in jewellery design education. Her work explores the integration of sustainability, outdoor and place-based learning, and Createch technologies within inclusive, practice-led teaching across further and higher education. She places a strong emphasis on embedding sustainability within the curriculum through raising awareness, practical approaches, encouraging positive behaviour change, and placing ethical decision-making at the core of creative practice.
