Session Outline
This presentation, “Do We Really Need to Add Sustainability to the Curriculum?”, recognises the competing demands already placed on curriculum space. While the Sustainable Development programme team has long advocated for dedicated sustainability opportunities and the mainstreaming of sustainability across the student experience, the session explores how sustainability is often already embedded within existing courses. It encourages colleagues to view sustainability not as additional content, but as a perspective that shapes what students learn, how they learn, and the capabilities they develop.
The presentation highlights that sustainability education is not only about the Sustainable Development Goals, but also about fostering critical thinking, ethical reasoning, collaboration, and the ability to navigate complexity and uncertainty. Examples from different disciplines demonstrate how sustainability can be relevant across a wide range of subject areas.
Through interactive activities, participants will identify where sustainability already exists in their teaching, explore practical opportunities for enhancement, and consider the support needed to embed these approaches. The emphasis is on achievable change rather than major curriculum redesign.
Overall, the presentation concludes that sustainability is not an additional burden but a valuable lens for enriching learning and preparing students to address an increasingly complex and uncertain future.
